The island of Swift Waters has existed for as long as anyone can remember. It is the last remaining home of wild horses, and is untouchable to the outside world. In it's founding years, a tournament was held by the harem to decide on it's leader. The stallions all battled for dominance over the vast herd, until it came down to three. Now, two of these stallions had made it this far into the tournament because they were the strongest stallions in the herd. The third made it through because there was no horse, mare or stallion, cleverer than he. His name was Dark Waters, and he struck a deal with his opponents. Rather than fight, he insisted, they should rule the herd together, for there were so very many horses, one stallion could not rule them all. "Let's be kings together, and with our queens, make this the greatest herd ever!" The other two agreed, and they each declared themselves a king.
The herd was split into three sections, all of which were headed by one of the three kings. Peacefully they dwelled together, until the day Dark Waters' true intentions were known. In the years between the tournament and that fateful day, Dark Waters and his queen had birthed two colts, and one filly. Their plan was to select their most loyal follower from their section, and mate him to their daughter. These two would eventual take the place as King and Queen of Dark Waters' section.
